Flor's Garden

Those are not Halloween costumes....scarecrows...to BOO away the birds in farms :) Very apt for the season. BOOWahahahhahaha

You have to meet Flor Tarriela in person...as her animated conversation will excite you to go into natural farming.

We got to Flor's Garden after lunch and caught them in the middle of Andry Lim's seminar on Natural Farming. Sorry that we can't disturb him for our chitchats...well, we can have our time in Davao when its just the girls and the boys.

We visited first the new baby Sunshines in the circular Jojie's Crib. They were comfortable under the charcoal fed tin can, over their red heads.

You can't miss the collection of culinary and medical herbs here. Notice the "Weedicinal" term. I myself have transformed my garden at home from ornamentals to herbals. Why? Because aside from the fact that it has that wild look I life, it smells sooooo good and it does have practical usage. More of culinary for me...but when I get the cough, we get out our stone and pound on Oregano leaves. One jigger and off goes the cough.

Flor and Jojie Lim took us around Flor's Garden.... walking around the "no smell" pens of Sunshines and pigs. I nibble on some flowers that have been introduced to me in the past.

One thing I picked up here...her use of empty coconut husks as you would use cobbled stones as steps in pathways. They look like river stones. But...when you step on them, you get an air like cushiony feeling. Thinking of employing this in my new outdoor bathroom.

Travelling and farm visits do teach you a lot. I didn't even know that Antipolo had a great landscape on this side. I didn't even know Antipolo existed on this side from Cogeo!

Real Is Sustainable

Seminars are a joy to give...When they are not forced to. When they go there on their own. No frills no treats, pure wanting to listen and learn:
Because of the mileage we do and the cross industries we move around in, we get to meet philanthropists who really move and act on their own.

One such lady has been distributing chicks to resettlement areas, including 10kgs of feeds (half of what the recipient will be needing). At the end of 60days, the recipient returns two (2) adults of about 2 to 2.5kgs live weight. In addition to that, the donor lady's foundation, buys back an additional three (3) adults at PHP150/kg live weight. The rest of the Sunshines, five (5) left to the recipient, may be eaten or sold.

I have computed to her costings, and made her realize that she is not earning at all. She smiles back and reminds me that there was a "cause" in the first place. True, teach the recipients the value of paying back and not simply receiving dole outs.

Doc Rey and I walks around these resettlement areas. You will see that there is hope to the so called squatters in Metro Manila. Given assistance AND they should be reoriented to what is proper business ways.

The lady starts them off with ten (10) Sunshines. The recipients are allowed to repeat AS LONG as they are meeting requirements of MOA. Once you don't do as agreed, you and your immediate family members are banned (I like that...very me)!

We do repetitive seminars for the group that have repeated several times.... by then, you know who are the ones who want to pursue.

Pics From You

I love getting photos from the growers from afar, as it is not normal for us to do farm visits to them.

Bert of Zamboanga is one who loads regularly, in small batches. These are the doable projects. He first took a seminar when he was planning on what to do for retirement. Worked on plans, slowly but surely...... only way...to do it small, slow and right...for sustainability.

Whenever I get an email from him, I open it first as I know it will have nice photos.

I got a batch of pics from Bert the other day...looks like I can use this photo for an AD :)

Radio Programs

Because the radio reaches a broad audience and cross segments, we are excited when we get invited for radio interviews. Guesting invitations had been accepted for various shows.

DWWW's Kaunlaran sa Agrikultura (774, Sun 4:30-7:30am) has Doc Rey regularly as Vet ng Bayan. ABS-CBN's DZMM's Kabukiran (630, Sat and Sun 4:40-6am) guests Doc Rey often and he is invited in their out of town seminars. Both agriculture programming.

Last week an FM station in Southern Tagalog, based in Batangas has met us during Agrilink and wants to feature Sunshine Chicken in their negosyo program. We go there after All Saint's Day as they want a live interview.

Another exciting invitation is by DZRH through Eng. Pol Rubia of AANI. Sunshine Chicken will be on their agriculture show aired Saturdays 7:30-9am, fed nationwide except Metro Manila...:) which is really the market that should be reached.

See you on the air!

Grin When Green

Today must be the day that answers my question about doing green architecture.

I grew up with moss covered fences, lagoons, well landscaped gardens, a lot full of orchids, dayonets, backyards that had been transformed into a huge green house...all these when green houses were not yet heard of...in the 60s :)

Making a move this quarter, had me I had me toying about green architecture. Actually what I have in mind is the homey, Hansel and Gretel type...the one that evokes walk through the forest type. I was asking my archi friend Gigi to help...but both of us got busy with Citem's FAME. I hope and pray she reads this to get her dreaming with me asap.

My searches led me to sites that were like Flash Gordon types...sci-fiction looks...not me. More like I didn't know the proper search words.

This morning, we get to join the garden show of the Cactus and Succulent Society of the Philippines. My attention was choosing the booth location and marketing Sunshine.

In the afternoon we did our monthly seminar. It is rare that I get to chitchat with the attendees after the seminar. Today was different! I can't pinpoint why, but I stayed behind in Organika while the orders were being processed. That gave me opportunity to do some chitchat which started with politics. My worst topic!!!! Am so apolitical :)

At a snap...it drifted into plants and in a second, this man was describing how he did his wall and chicken coop...with plants! WAIT...all of a sudden I knew what he was talking about.

We could have gone on...but no one was left and he had to travel back to Bulacan.

Thank you for leading me to search through vertical gardens, green roofs etc.

I now look forward to that garden show.,...Why? look at this!

See how the goats live on the roofs? My chickens will love this...surely!

The look I want now will be mine, and not to recreate what Mommy had made me live through as a child. Not that I didn't want it..,.its just that I want to inject my own now.

Garden To Benefit

I was glad that I paid attention to Zac Sarian's announcement today over the radio. During breakfast before Agri Kapihan, he talked about stalls open and if I wanted to get one....we can duplicate the alliance of Agrilink and we can go side by side :)

YES...sure! This will be an exciting garden show for us to explore and learn from the free seminars. Get schedule here.. "Gardening for a Better Environment"

While Zac and I were selecting our spots, some of our friends at Kaunlaran sa Agrikultura also got booths. We all laughed at us having a Friends' Pavilion :)

November 20-30, Quezon Memorial Circle, East Ave Gate. Near the restaurants and parking lot. I noted ingress at November 14...maybe that gives us more time there.

We will have the day old chicks, ready to slaughter, dressed Sunshines and our ready to eat products.

Sunshine, Action...

Where's my camera? It is still asleep in my huge bag in the bedroom!

When in Isabela, we make it a point to go to the farm early when we can to witness the gathering of Sunshines for dressing that day. Today was one of those days we had been rejuvenated already and raring to go to the farm.

I was so eager because yesterday, Doc Rey came home with a small bag of goodies. Freshest veggies. All I had to do was wash them, I can even do a wishy washy because we are sure no chemicals there. I didn't spin them nor wipe them dry. Immediately, I transfer them to a glass microwaveable dish and set it on 2mins. Them came out freshly perspiring and steaming...still green and crunchy...perfectly done. A platter of buro was placed with it on the side. Doc Rey it was the best recipe...weheheh recipe ka dyan!

Today, I was going to do my own picking of veggies...

What greeted me on the gate was a nice sight. Our men had the harvest of Sunshines, tied up and hanging from the mens' necks. You don't get that sight in Metro Manila...but yes, that is how they ready to be slaughtered are carried and placed in the crates, to be transported to the slaughter house.

If you watch Survivor Philippines...its a grander version of the immunity necklace :)

Sad I wasn't able to click that sight. I should always be ready with my camera.

Do Re Me

Do Re Me...

Do Reinvent Meself :)

The past shows made me see a large section of the market, in a short period of time. New ideas of course are created as you listen to others.

We didn't bring Sunny Rotisserie to the shows, but for some reason, that was what I wanted to act on fast. We introduced a new flavor :) Used a new base for marinade. Of course, as usual, no preservatives nor synthetic ingredients.

The original rub recipe went well, but we wanted to offer something different.

Just like having a classic black dress or shirt....accessorize!

Your Time Is Important

And energies too :)

We had been getting texts and email if the seminars for September and again this October, will be pushing through.

Just for the record, so far, since we started our 4th Sunday seminars, we NEVER canceled. We went on. On bad weather days, I remember having one or two arrive. We go on at 2pm as much as we can, sharply at 2pm :) For prepaid bookings, surely, it will be honored on next month's seminar...there was a valid reason for not showing up.

We value your time and energy. In the same manner, if you scheduled us to do a seminar in your area....PLEASE PLEASE also start on agreed time. I can go on vacation everyday and spend time at the salon half of my days, but when we have an agreed work to do...let's respect each others' time and efforts.

Oh hahahahahahah...I just recalled a seminar scheduled in Citem's FAME for one of the Health and Wellness topics. It was scheduled for 12noon. As I was going out for lunch at 1pm, I bump into the supposed speaker at 12nn! Meaning super late by 1hour! I'm sure he was expecting a roomful waiting??? Even though how interested your crowd is....I think respect is on order for all :)

Another question we get monthly is...."is the seminar on XXXX?" or "is the XXX the 4th Sunday?" Well, please use your calendars. It doesn't require an Einstein to determine the 4th Sunday :) Again, I am happy to reply to texts and emails, but I will gladly respond to legitimate inquiries.

Take time to read...so we both get to have a more meaningful exchange when we email or talk.

See you on the 4th Sunday.

Nice, Comfortable & Pleasant Smelling

...like going home and finding your slippers behind the door....describes our mobile office, which we took out of town yesterday for the 1st time. Manila-Santiago, Isabela was the route, with continuing service to some LGUs in Isabela before heading back to Manila on Thursday.

That was how we also kept our operations for Sunshine Chicken. Our group is small, no agendas, no power plays. We have remained focused. Thankful that the chicken on our personal dinner plates don't have to be subsidized by the company :)

Today, as we do exit interviews in our minds, after the two trade shows we did....we know we go back to an operation that is relaxing to be part of, rather to be an outsider ogling us :)

Proof of it? We saw how during Agrilink. Other companies ride on our and our supplier's name and popularity. Many people walk up and say other companies say they are just the same as us. Or that they use the brand we breed.

Merci...we are not the same. We import from SASSO of France. Documents may be checked. Our company is forever reinventing itself. Product development is constant. We study what will be good for you.

Thank you for the complement! We are glad to be simple and keeping decisions neat and serving. Even SASSO of France has seen that.

Eye Openers

Been busy for about a month because of Agrilink and Citem's FAME. Since a little before Ondoy, I had been in Manila and away from the countryside, farm and home in Isabela.

Friends have proven best allies in big shows. Agrilink have strengthened ties. During Citem's FAME, talks with others have also showed that relationships formed on agendas and business do bog down and don't last. Well, you need the black to balance the white. So, be thankful for bad vibes as it makes you treasure simple good.

The daytrip to Isabela yesterday made me see the wrath of the floodwaters and landslides :(. The cloudy skies and rains on the way that are setting the welcome stage for Ramil, has started to pile up soil again on the street from the mountain soilfalls.

During the 8hr trip, I get a call from my Benguet grower, and ordering a substantial loading. Weren't they still under the relief stage? I have to give my hat off! Moving on real fast. Of course to be ahead, one has to move forward...at least move and jiggle a bit.

A scene on TV I saw recently is a continuation of how we should be pliable, in my mind. The Benguet relief and operation showed a school housing the homeless folks. They were seen sweeping, cleaning, brushing their teeths, fixing things around, making makeshift furnitures, plumbing etc etc and ETC. You'd think that: that is the way they really are and MORE. You get to see the real person in times of hardship and problems, when your back is on the wall.

Do you remember the scenes in other centers in Manila? Play the news in your mind. Listen to feedback on radio now....you know the difference I am referring to.

On the way to work today...geeezzzz...I have been away indeed for over a month. Saw new businesses up. Several new structures are in finishing touches. AND.... we crossed Calao Bridge this morning in Santiago. The water is high, dark brown and NOT...correct, NOT moving. Bad!

I asked my staff as I got to work, if she noticed the river. She did too. Yesterday the water wasn't high and it was flowing freely.

Yikes, this is still the effects of Pepeng? I pray that Ramil will not affect us as much as Pepeng. If no landslides and no closed traffics, we won't feel it as we are scheduled to go back to Manila Thursday, when Ramil is supposed to be felt.

Perks

What do I look forward to when I do Citem shows?

1) Productive contacts. Less talking here, but a lot of work later. Other shows are non stop talking and detailing, but you end up not really moving forward in terms of marketing.

2) Great shopping. Eewwwww, I had to go back to my seat and surf to stop myself! But I have to go back for at least ONE of Dita Sandico-Ong's Banana Wraps...even just ONE! I normally get what I want in "all colors please". A lot of interesting products. This is FAME, so it was all industries. I am enamored since October 15 by a Cebuano painter, Jun Impas, whose works I have just seen. I have been tempted to get his brook scene....but I have priorities at the moment of my moving business locations...so I have convinced myself to first see my landscaping and interiors before I get new furniture stuff.

So I went back to my booth and took...

3) Time to surf....because you are not constantly on your toes talking. I was instantly gifted (for tempering my buying spree)....see what I saw! Doc Rey will be gratified for his hard work and patience to learn his Power Point. Doc Rey's seminar from an attendee's point of view.

I'm glad I was led to Danny's blog. He writes well and entertains me. I remember the waterful day of September 26. He texted me that day1, typhoon came and rats or was it cats played with some of his chicks.

Citem FAME, 50th year

Citem does support the Philippine suppliers and that is the reason we also join in their activities. You have to help others be able to assist you too :)

This is the first year they have added the category of Health and Wellness in their show and am I glad we decided to do the last minute plannings for this event.

Manned the booth myself as focused trade show for buyers are less talk but more do....so you don't end up wrinkled and dry at the end of the day. I have to say we did very good in getting seen and creating new business for the dressed Sunshines.

Still have time to catch up until October 18. Two venues, World Trade Center and SMX Convention Center. The Health and Wellness is at World Trade Center.

Thank you to the Health and Wellness staff of Citem.

Moving Few Steps

We are making a major move of all our operations, centralizing it in the Araneta Center. Offices, dressed Sunshines' meat shop, Organika, pick up of our dayold chicks... we will incorporate with other farm suppliers.

Excited to do this as we will be in the middle of everything and everywhere. Logistics and accessibility to clients who drive or commute. Landscaping is planned. Green architecture is being employed!

We've had the Fairview address from the start and we will not let go of the landmark. Manpower shortage is forcing us to close down the store facing Quirino Highway...BUT, we are moving the inquiries and pick up at Organika, our meat shop facing Regalado Ave (fronting the Regalado gate of SM Fairview). People are used to this place for the dressed Sunshines and this is where we hold our monthly seminars on Raising Sunshine Chicken. Actually it is far more comfortable for the clients making inquiries. It is airconditioned and has parking.

For prosperity, we will not let go of this address :)

There are talks with new lessees for the property. We took the clue and opportunity to make the move to a centralized location. It will all be for the better!

Making the mini few steps move, before we make the major one.

How Many Golden Stars?

New frequently asked questions...

Where is the origin of Starshines?

We import the PS from SASSO of France.

How many golden eggs can be expected from the Starshines?

About 260 per annum.

Starshine

I go where the universe takes me. I always say that and when in doubt, when my initial vibes don't work, I throw the decision up and let the universe take it :)

That was how I got to the name Starshine for our layers. No intention whatsoever to name it at this stage. Just before I first blogged about Starshine...Zac Sarian mentioned "moonshine" in relation to something that skips my mind now.

Next thing I knew, I was blogging about our golden egg layers and voila...I typed the name Starshine. Very me...even the spur of the moment name went with the universe :)

So that's it. Our line of grass fed layers...Starshine.

I like the name. Catchy, cousin to Sunshine, nicknamed Star...and it shines!

Worth Our While

Agrilink 2009 was very good for us. Inspite of most exhibitors' laments that attendance was low, sales were bad...it was tremendously great for us. Granting that the recent calamities didn't allow the expected number of visitors, we were very busy detailing and entertaining. There are normally six (6) of us at any given time in the booth, and no one ate on time.

Our sales on dayold chicks tripled for retail compared to last year's, and orders for deliveries have been booked keeping us busy for the next weeks to come. Dressed chickens were brought for display purposes but we saw that on day1, people knew about our product and were walking up to us specifically to purchase the dressed Sunshines. By the last day, we were sold out quite early! After a day's rest, we have instructed to personnel to look into an unscheduled dressing, as our freezers are empty....a nice problem huh?

What do we account the interest to?

1) Word of mouth - A lot of clients were repeat customers plus the referrals and new ones who saw us

2) Experience - Same with the dressed Sunshines, they heard us through the chicken vine :)

3) Neighborhood - Someone from the large booth across us asked me if the set up of Teresa Orchard, Sunshine Chicken and AANI were all owned by one person. I asked why? He said because from ingress to 3day sales...everyone in the booths were helping one another. That is from food, supot, tali, answering inquiries, panukli etc etc etc....its not just about business.

4) Passion - We really love what we are doing and earnestly believe in our product.

5) Competition :) - We continue to reinvent ourselves and compete solely with our selves.

6) You - Fast learners. Over the years, you allowed our team to educate you about eating well and healthy. You also learned to grow your own food. You continued to learn with us.

Actually, trade shows are there to benefit you. I hope it was also worth your while.

Last Chance At Agrilink

Today is the last day of Agrilink 2009. Read about it here.

May be the last day, but collaborations and friendships built over time goes on and on. Most plans are cemented over "hito" lunches.

So watch out for more agriculture shows, on land, on wheels and on the air.

We've Had This For A Long Time Now

Since July 2008, we have the blacks, striped pharaoh looking, the dark red brown and the mocha colors. Look at the picture then (notice those were still our old chick boxes):

And the ready for slaughters now, as being displayed at Agrilink 2009: The blacks, Pharaoh/Cleopatra looking, dark brown reds, mochas and the Naked Necks.
It is not a new line nor strain for us.

What we have coming...I say coming soon in March 2010, because the Certified Parent Stocks are here already and not coming at an undetermined date :) So what is to expect? The Starshine Golden Egg Layers and another strain of broilers that will add color to your wonderfully green farm.

Great Decision

For several years, we'd have an outdoor and an indoor booths for Agrilink. Same people you see...but you give a different look and marketing in both booths....you end up different marketing skills are employed.

Taxing and manpower intensive for the outdoor booth. I do so many shows, that by last year, I was able to man the indoor booth alone, being experienced on the How Tos. This year, manpower shortage and camaraderie urged me to join our outdoor set up.

The amount I saved for the indoor was used to furnish our mobile office. Very worth it, as I am resting inside my mobile office, typing this...while I can still keep an eye on the booth outside.

The outdoor booth was effective because we have ranging adults, day old chicks and dressed chickens all in one booth. It was easy to explain and show off.

Logistics for selling was much easier, as stocks were in our vans just beside the booth.

The bad weather was not a deterrent to have Sunshine :)

Healthy Ice Cream

Gerry and Zac got lost from my view for some minutes. Next thing I knew, they were raving about the ice cream they had at Rene Almeda's Alaminos Goat Farm booth. I know Rene was having a taste test of the sausages BAI developed for his goat...but ice cream? There was not mention of that.

Oh boy...do I love ice cream. But then, will the one from goat's milk taste good? How was it compared to dirty ice cream...they said BETTER! Hmmmmm....what flavors...Ube and Cheese. If these two men say it was masarap...am sure it was. I made a mental note to try it later.

A few minutes later....Rene was walking towards us and brought two (2) cups of Ube and Cheese ice cream. He must have remembered my sweet tooth. Seeing how tiny the cups were for my teeth...Doc Rey gave his cup to me.

YUMMY...promise! I walked over to congratulate the Almedas. Still not available commercialy. They commissioned someone to make it for them for serving during Agrilink :)

Selling at PHP40 per small cup...it was so worth it. Creamy, and real pure ingredients. You can taste the freshness.

Certified F1 Free Range Golden Brown Egg Layers

Certified Parent Stocks that will be producing our Starshine Golden Egg Layers have arrived. This is not our regular F1 dual purpose Sunshines. Our Starshine layers is a new line :)

Coming in March 2010. We are excited about it ourselves as the golden brown egg market is snowballing.

AANI ng Sunshine Chicken at Teresa Orchard

Double meaning...yes. But either way, you get the image and feeling of collaboration :)

We were at ingress early this morning for our outdoor booths at Agrilink 2009. On my right is Teresa Orchard of Zac Sarian and on my left is the retail of AANI (Agri Aqua Network International).

Pol Rubia has set up our tents and we peeped early to see how simple and doable we can show housing for our Sunshines. We go back later this afternoon to just hang nets, and kubo housing.

We are next to fantastic structures, but we planned it this way....we use the difference to accent our advantages :)

Our friend supplier of SM Supermarkets was complaining today that not all SM outlets are able to move his goods. I said "think of it the other way....you are creating a certain market and you are sticking to it...SM may ride on it". O diba?

Free Consults

Mr Zac Sarian called to tell me that he is writing about "Free Consultations" from Doc Rey on free range chickens during Agrilink 2009.

I was thankful for his writing about Sunshines, but after the conversation I thought....we've always had free constultations, it wasn't like it will be only for Agrilink :)

But I learned something there...maybe its not common knowledge?

Yes, consulting Doc Rey on free range chicken raising is FREE. I think it is ok to say that he doesn't charge PF, because he is also open to being asked as Vet ng Bayan over DWWW's Kaunlaran sa Agrikultura.

Our seminars are also almost always FREE. Fairview's 4th Sundays seminars are PHP450, but that has 10 chicks and a CD. In provincial seminars, we charge a minimal fee to cover venue. Overall and more often, no charge, FREE :)

Do You Step Back Or Move Forward?

Well, stepping back doesn't necessarily mean negative, but I see it as cutting back to gain other things. More like repositioning and refocusing.

Why am I in these thoughts now? We have been so busy and multitasking brains and time is taking its toll on productivity. So do we step back and cut back on work and relax? We should? But that will mean a break on the momentum we built :)

Of course we have to move forward and tackle the problem of time and energy, looking at it from within and outside. Now, we got a mobile office, allowing us to daydream even when on the long road trips. This will let us have productive meetings and mini seminars even under the tree. We are now equipped and ready!

So excited to break it in after Agrilink 2009 and be back for the FAME show....in a more relaxed state.

I act fast. Saw it on a Saturday, showed it to Doc Rey Sunday, and wrapped up papers Monday. That is the ease of single decisions...no corporate world to go around to.

For Sure There Is Sunshine

Very thankful that our shipment of Certified Parent Stocks from SASSO of France came the day before, September 25. Day before Ondoy's wrath. Had we had been scheduled for the 26th flight, maybe flight had been cancelled by then. If the flight got through, maybe by the time we were able to clear Customs at 11am, the traffic and floodwater had deemed the roads closed?

This importation had been delayed already as there were clearances from France that had to be met and we had to reschedule hatching dates.

Now look at our new babies:

We have brought in two new strains, aside from our original redbrown, our naked necks. Now, we have a tricolored bird and the golden brown egg layers.

We will have them debut in six (6) months :)

One thing is sure, there will always be Sunshine.

Great Choice, La Traviesa

We woke up early for the regular Sunday, DWWW's Kaunlaran sa Agrikultura. Been having long nights and days lately so we were sort of feeling under, but had to head to DZMM's Sa Kabukiran''s invitation to do a seminar in Cavite.

Driving at a leisurely pace, we didn't go through the diversion road but negotiated the old road, bringing back memories of childhood trips to Cavite beaches :)

Getting to La Traviesa, we were greeted by nice, airy architecture. The guard led us to the pool area where the seminar room was. Very nice! There was a pool that looked out to a rice field. From the well furnished seminar room on the 2nd floor, I was able to go around and get the view 360degrees. You see the soon to open spa wellness area, the fields around that refreshes your mind and eyes, and the pool that is clean and inviting. The hotel rooms were tastefully furnished, clean and airy.

I have to work first and set up... but then, they had everything prepared. Projector, screen..all I had to do was plug the laptop.

It was really good vibes all the way. The crowd came from all over Cavite, and we should say nationwide! There were several who came from Manila, Visayas, OFWs etc. The hosts, owners of La Traviesa were most hospitable.

Perfect location as Gen Trias is accessible from both Coastal and SLEX.

It was a good seminar, although limited time...Doc Rey gave a good one :)

2nd Is Like FIRST

Haven't heard from a frank friend for a long time...maybe because of time zones. Rare that I am surfing at this time, but Ondoy did change schedules and enforced priorities.

He was talking about his son's organization being disappointed at how difficult it is to donate. Yes, you read it right... difficult. To spell it easier, HARD.

It isn't about solicitation that makes it tedious. It is about dealing with the government about duties and taxes. That floored me. As the Canadians say...flabbergasted!

Frank knew that Canada, more specifically Toronto is my 2nd home. If I can spread the word please? Opening the website...I knew it was meant to be...

Please visit the kapisanan in Toronto :)

La Traviesa

Sa Kabukiran of DZMM is conducting seminars nationwide and has requested us to join them in the bandwagon.

Next stop will be in Gen Trias, Cavite. October 4, Sunday, La Traviesa Resort. Doc Rey will be scheduled for 9am, Raising Sunshine Chicken.

This will be FREE.

Twit Twit

There are some new things I prefer not to get into as a way of simplifying life. But then again, there are some things you can't delete as you get invites all the time.

So ok ok...let's try to twit twit.... twit sunshinechicken twit twit

Plastic

Did you feel alluded to? Take a bow then....

I was referring to the material plastic, that was hanging and lay everywhere after the flood had subsided.

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg? Which caused what in the global warming and change of weather? We know how garbage and synthetics in our midst played a major part in the earth's warming.

As I was watching the relief operations on TV the other night and having the picture in my mind of "The Day After" when we went around Marikina and San Mateo....

I noticed first that..."geez...they take the effort to show their organization's sando bag printing as they hand over their help"!

Switching stations...ok, this time, there were no named in the sando bags, just plain white.

Then it dawned on me....YIKES plastic bags again to the relief centers. With this volume, its like the same percentage of the one month's rainfall in 6hrs that September 26.

But I know, how will it be transported and thrown to rooftops without getting wet and torn?

I pray that there is a group tasked to at least deal with all this plastics.

Where Were You Yesterday?

I was still going to continue my colorful day. Started real early, oblivious to the previous night's supposed to be continued rainfall. Acknowledge Ondoy, the storm.

I got a text from a customer who loaded Friday. He says that day1, storm and a cat attack. I texted back that his resourcefulness will be put into test...not realizing that dawn really was already pouring. We have a concrete roof over our heads, so there is no noise of splattering rain.

Cleared some sections of my cabinet of clothes that will never fit me again. Brought those to a friend who may have some use for it. I not only accepted the fact that reality is I am now BIG, but also, clearing makes way for new ones :)

After, I headed towards CP Garcia to go to Makati or Greenhills via Katipunan. That was my main problem of the day (embarassing). Strong rains and flood wasn't a obstacle when you are in a truck. Traffic is! When the cars infront won't nor can't move, that is the one that held me at CP Garcia for about 2hrs.

I decided to go back and that was when I saw that Elliptical Road was almost not moving as they can't get to Commonwealth as flood waters were high and frightfully rushing. Doc Rey egged me to go through the waters. "If the buses can, you can"! There was no traffic the long stretch of Commonwealth as people were stuck at both ends of the long highway.

Problem started when I got to the entrance of Fairview. Traffic wasn't budging as small vehicles can't go through. I was like stuck for like 5hours. But, listening to the radio, I felt so thankful that my ordeal was just being in traffic. Restaurants were around that I can get food from. I had rain boots around and won't have to wade in garbage water. A tankful of fuel allowed me to have airconditioning the whole time. Laptop and a Globe Visibility kept me happy. Meantime, Doc Rey kept calling and said I should just leave the car when I see water rising. I was in an elevated area! Galant as he can get..... he asked driver to drop him at the traffic point on the other end of Commonwealth and walked walked and swam to get where I was...for company. Really a reliable partner!

Seeing all that happened around our area...Marikina, Fairview, San Mateo, Batasan...you do a double take to say "thank you". All my family and friends are relatively OK. I have a friend whose house got washed away and he lost everything, but his family is all alive.

Today, our seminar pushed through. Coordinating with our breeding farm, everything is perfect. Great that our chicks arrived from France Friday and not scheduled yesterday.

The mere fact that you have the time to read this, apparently, you also have everything to thank for too :)

Colorful Day

8:45am was the ETA, but my livestock broker said that barring any problems, he should be able to release about 11am.

Yes, our batch of Certified Parent Stocks from SASSO of France arrived today.

Since it was for call at 11am, I took time. Bank duties, had coffee at a leisurely pace etc. By a little after 9am, my broker calls and says that the SASSO colored chicks had been released! Surely I will credit Odi's good job, and the perfect working vibes we have with the French company :)

The vehicle to transport was there already, but I was set for 11am...."can you wait for me pls so I can see our new babies"?

After some clicks clicks, the chicks were on their way to their new farm. Chitchats with the other livestock brokers there as we were on the same flight with two other importers. Very showbiz talks about what's happening and what didn't happen weheheheh.

Decided to relax and spend the day with colors around me.. for prosperity. Prosperity for the shops at Podium ahahahahha.

We have new strains, in addition to our basic red, our naked necks. As I said, colorful :)

Oh BOY!

I didn't understand the excitement about a battery operated back pack spray.

Why will it be worth buying it? Easy to operate. No exertion to get the product out to spray. You get a constant pressure, irregardless of volume inside tank.

We are distributing this product and will be available at all our Solraya Enterprises stores in Manila, Solano, Santiago City and Vigan. Suggest price is PHP6,800

Its Loading Time

Time of the year that everyone is preparing for Christmas' stocks and inventory. Food is the first thing that a family spends for so our Sunshine farmers are now planning loading schedules.

The long range planners started loading in August till early September. Why? Their niche markets want the large sized chicken roasters. Not only does it look good when served, but a 90-120days old Sunshines have slowly developed that taste that it is known for :)

The ones who load now are centered on the Christmas weeks till New Year :) Their market wants the smaller sized ones.

In last year's Agrilink, we were sold out on the dayold chicks! We knew that by Christmas 2008, the word will be spread around that we did taste like "native chicken".

I gifted our lawyer a couple of weeks back and his reaction was: it looks very appetizing due to the macho size, and you really sink in your teeth to the flavor.

Know your market.

FAME

This morning I saw on TV that there will be a remake of that old movie, it was my generation, FAME. Almost everyone wanted to be a dancer and a welder back then. Maybe not a welder! But it opened my eyes to using large abandoned spaces and things...remember her apartment? It was an old warehouse.

Anyway, weeks ago, I got an email from CITEM, inviting Sunshine Chicken to exhibit in the Golden Edition of the Manila F.A.M.E. International. They are opening a new section for Health and Wellness.

Forgot all about it, buried in paper work was the application I had filled out, waiting to be faxed.

Good thing I saw the news on the remake of FAME and called up CITEM today.

See you there...They will have the big event at both the World Trade Center and SMX Convention Center.

Sunshine Chicken will be at the World Trade Center...Oct 15-18.

Let's support what is Pinoy. CITEM also works hard for us :) In turn, all the shows we join are meant for consumer awareness to benefit our growers.

Plan For Value

Often discussed is housing materials to be used. We always said, "use what you have already around you, stocked in bodegas or ready to be thrown away".

What do we end up often with? Tarpaulins, rusty steel sheets, rusty and precut steel bars, brittle and precut wood etc.

Ok so we start with those and make our shelters.

We have instant housings, we save the cost to buy materials and almost no labor because we sort of jigsaw puzzle pieces that need no care anymore :)

What now?

It will be great for several uses. Example with tarpaulins. I was at the farm today as we are building new ranging areas. I thought about moving materials only but then, the tarpaulin is not just old (it was already to start with)...it is now rags. Like can't be used! Being out in the heat and rains...it was literally weathered out.

I will still say..."use what you have already"...

Most important is going through the learning curve of raising the Sunshines. After we get a straighter line in our graph, and we are thinking about increased production...THEN we think about more cost efficient housings.

Remember, we didn't buy at the beginning...so its ok to have them turn into pumpkins for now :) Baby steps.

Now we are constructing small poultry buildings with wood that we got from a demolished structure. Higher level....not throw away stuff, but good lumber and roofing sheets. Actually, the ones from demolished old buildings are better than buying new ones.

Be Creative With Your Resources

What do you have around you? Start with what interests you...work around those and develop a concept.

We had been concentrating on the dressed Sunshines. We had Adobo, home cooked, simple recipe. It was loved by balikbayans and were purchased as pasalubongs.

I had always toyed with the idea of having these vacuum packed for ready to eat and take as gifts. We knew already that our packaging withstood plane luggage packings and was perfect for comfort food gifts.

Brought up those ideas to others...but then maybe some don't want to think out of the box. I always turn boxes inside out and see what's being hidden.

The Ultimate Taste Test of Our Awesome Planet opened our eyes more and reiterated my vision for the cooked food market. They loved the Adobo and wanted to get it. It was originally meant to be the taste test medium, but looks like water seeks its own course and it was blatantly there that we can't shove it aside.

Now, what are we up to? We will be starting with Sunshines in Adobo, Dinuguan and Kaldereta.

It will be included in our delivery to your homes and will be showcased in Agrilink 2009.

Frozen, vacuum packed...ready to thaw and eat :) Have you thawed about it?

Guess What?

Can you think of what new strains we are adding to our Sunshine Dayold Chicks line?

This week we get our new Certified Parent Stocks. When we say COMING SOON, it is, because it will be landed. Just like birth certificates, they are named as Solraya babies.

We are named as importer and not just the trader nor salesman :) So you know you are dealing with us directly.

We will be happy to show you our importation papers, naming Solraya as the importer and verifiable with the Bureau of Animal Industry.

Reason To Smile

We are so happy that slowly, more and more rice farmers are converting to organic fertilizers. Now that they have seen that by just using a commerical bio-organic fertilizer, they have increased their yield from last cropping.

It is so hard to explain to farmers who got the bad ends of deals when buying so called organic fertilizers. You have to be an example and show your own yield.

The photo above, taken at Brgy Salvador, Santiago City Isabela, shows the fields that used plainly Durabloom Bio-Organic Fertilizers. Just that simple. They didn't even follow instructions well.

Computing yields last night showed that even without following instructions...and nature related disaster...the yield was better than last cropping.

Now, we can talk about asking them to attend Natural Farming seminar on rice production by Andry Lim. I was telling them last night about low farm inputs following the Korean principles.

Now they ask Where and When! Makes us smile....We hope to encourage more.

Oh yes, you can use the manure from your free ranging Sunshines.

Agrilink Is Coming!

Read about it here.

Time flies by us so fast that we are now cramming for Agrilink 2009's preparations. Slated for October 8-10.

I have always stayed indoors while Doc Rey and rest of the staff stayed in our outdoor booth. This time, we will consolidate our efforts and have an outdoor setup, beside Teresa Orchard.

Why excites me about the outdoors?
1) We may serve you earlier and after the Agrilink's formal hours.
2) We are able to setup a more realistic and doable display.
3) Seminars may be conducted everyday, even 2x a day. One on one consultations are easier with visuals.

Doc Rey will be around the whole time to do FREE small group seminars. More like 10am and 3pm daily :)

Ultimate Test

September 13...lucky 13 for me....do I or not?

The Ultimate Test Test #2 by Anton and Rache of Our Awesome Planet a tour and food blog.... to do or not to do.

Pressure...this may be a make or break thing. But, I recall Cory Aquino say, when she wanted a group in Luneta, her advisers were saying it was easier to fill up Makati. Cory said...she wanted to know now if the Filipinos were for her, that is why she wanted Luneta.

So then GO for it. If for anything, if I get negative reviews, it will be constructive for me. So any way it goes, WIN!

But, how do I do a taste test? We sell dressed chickens, I don't have staff..hmmmm.....I would have wanted to do a Tinola but hard to transport and serve. Do I bring my rotisserie? Hard to cut and serve.

ADOBO!!! We've had this good home cooked style that we know is closest to your comfort zone.

Day before, the 12th, we did the Adobo. Got to Two Serendra, the venue at exactly 10am. We were the first to arrive :)

Nervous, as every other booth looked prepped and attractive. We were simple and just that, simple. But then again...that was how we wanted to be...we were simple, easy and back to basic. No frills, just good!

Soon after, people were coming back for refills. People were walking up to say that we tasted good. The organizer said he was hearing feedback that the chicken was great. A lady walked up, after several repeats...to say that our table was her favorite.

I don't know what the reviews will end up saying in paper. I got my fill for the day. If I don't get good rating in paper, then maybe the ones who ate Sunshines were too full to fill up their exit review papers ahahahhahahah.

I'm glad I did it. Thank God there was no landslide to stop us from taking the Ultimate Test Test. Thank you to Anton, Rache and Ivan...and of course to the foodies who took time to go. Thank you too to my friend Jessica, Vivian who helped and Doc Rey who was very supportive.

Take Time To Learn

Often been asked how I am able to keep up with marketing and being able to run with times.....

Never ending reinvention of yourself. You are your own competitor, supporter, ally, critic. If you are blaming someone else for your slow turns, you may need to read self help books instead :)

I took the first offer of The Power of Pen. No, it didn't make me a better writer, but I think knowing what you don't know helps???

You might want to attend the next :)

Great Holiday

September 07 was declared a national holiday, but the seminar at Central State University went as scheduled. We were given a timetable and Doc Rey was to start at 8:30am. By 8am, Ariel, the coordinator was already texting finding out where we were. We are almost always on time so I appreciate it when people do stick to schedules.

The registration was very well organized and same may be said about the welcoming committee. As we were driving by the auditorium, they knew who we were...maybe we were bright as the sunshine :)

There is something about school organized seminars that are very rewarding for our team to do. The organizers are sticklers to details. They are passionate. You were invited because they thirst for knowledge. It is made open to the public and they invite farmers for the information exchange. Conversation is about advocacy and real honest interest to do better. It is offered for FREE to all.

We finished the day at CLSU feeling light hearted and knew that we will be glad to go the next time they ask. Rain or shine, holiday or not. We really thank the organizers of the Central State University's (CLSU) seminar.

Headed for Isabela after a very good lunch at their canteen...by 4pm, guess where we were???? Just before reaching Caranglan, there was a long line and the police were saying "not to move" as there was a landslide upfront. Not move up? But the landslide area is way up, like another 20kms away....

We inched our way up to the site. Thanked Zac Sarian in our minds, for giving me a bagful of sweet Rambutan from Teresa Orchard. He may have had a premonition, as he specifically said, it was to be eaten for today's trip!

The Caranglan landslide was open at about a little past midnight. Thing is, the vehicles from the other side, going to Manila, took up 2 to 3 lanes...some drivers even slept and was left obstructing the highway :) There was a more zigzagy road, in the already steep and curly roads of the mountain range....as you maneuver around the bigger trucks that created an obstacle course.

For some reason, God played a trick and speakers of the radio won't work during that long wait. No news nor music to listen to, strong rains that prevented you from mingling with other stranded motorists, poor cellphone signals....turned out well. Gave you quality time for talk :)

So Much Time In My Hands

The past days..it was all about time.

We are in Vigan for an extended stay. Doc Rey working, while I had been going around Vigan on foot, driving around and feeling the little old world that it evokes.

Watches...I revived my love for old watches and bought some antique ones and gleefully asked a staff to take it to watchmaker. It took all of PHP80 to make it work. Sometime ago I saw a watch on a friend's arm and made a mental note to ask her about it. As I said, time is now my topic....I called her to please reserve it for me.

Another about time, this time Bohol time. I was told by our host in Bohol that we will be staying in homestays.

As I now have the luxury of time to surf...see where it brought me...WOW, can't wait to fly to Bohol's time.

I've have always wanted to visit Bohol but time didn't allow. Really thankful that work takes us to wonderful places and experiences.

Natural farming and money

By FLOR G. TARRIELA
August 31, 2009, 7:01pm

Last week, at the Attracting Wealth Seminar sponsored by the New Life Alabang Christian Center, one of the speakers was Dodong Cacanando of Moriah Farms one of the, if not the biggest lettuce farm in Bukidnon supplying Mcdonalds and KFC. His story is quite amazing, migrating to Bukidnon with his family to plant lettuce when everyone else told him it was not possible. Until recently, all lettuce we ate in the Philippines were mainly imported, as to grow lettuce is quite delicate. To grow them, most used covered nursery to protect the precious leaves from the elements.

When the price of oil shot up last year, and everything else with it, including fertilizers, production
costs went up so high, his profit margins were cut. The cost of fertilizer requirements almost doubled. But he didn’t want to borrow to finance the increased cost of production. He therefore had no choice but to live with what he has in the farm.

This led him to a technology, the natural farming technology of Dr Hans Kyu Cho of Korea, taught locally by Andrey “Less Is More” Lim, Founder/Consultant, Tribal Mission Foundation International Inc. whose passion is to improve the lives of farmers. This new technology is revolutionary since you just leave nature the way it is. For example, no tilling of soil. The key to good plants/vegetables is enriching the soil though beneficial microorganisms, using natural materials (like leaves, grasses and weeds) readily available in the farm. Andrey manages a 30 hectare Helen farm in Davao using
the natural farming way. They have about 800 pigs and they do not smell. Yes, they don’t smell, they don’t even take a bath, so less water, thanks to these beneficial micro organisms.

What is natural farming? It is farming by using natural materials , non chemicals , that promote the growth of beneficial micro organisms in the soil. Don’t feed the plants, feed the soil to have healthy plants. When plants are healthy, like people, they are more resistant to diseases , and will be stronger. So that plants and vegetables we eat will have nutrients for our body. One school of thought why we have more cases of cancer nowadays, affecting even children, is that the food, plants and vegetables we eat no longer have the necessary nutrients we need due to depleted soil.

With Dodongs farming experience, his Bible readings saw a new light from which came out his new business philosophy . For example, he says that from the seed, develops the roots and then the leaves and back to the roots etc. When the plant grows to maturity, it produces a lot of food. What to do with this excess food generated? The plant stores it in a special container we call fruit. And fruiting comes in the proper season, at the right timing. He says , we can’t rush the growth of a tree. Even if we want to and just bombard it with watering and fertilization, when it is not yet time, it just won’t bear fruit. Or if it does, the tendency is for the plant to die at an earlier age.

Just as fruits are the by- product of a healthy plant, it’s the same in a business where money/profit is the by- product of a healthy business. I recall Topax Colayco in the Finex Seminar “Riding through the Crises”, he said, “ the fastest way to get rich is to get rich slowly”. We just can’t rush getting rich or fast forward trees to bear fruits before its time. There will always be repercussions.

Today, Dodong says that his lettuce is growing very well and in the wide open, beating all odds. For when he started in Bukidnon, everyone said he cant grow lettuce . Much more now that he is not using chemical fertilizers. Dodong’s story is just an example of being successful using the natural farming way. I recall being told after knowing that I was an advocate of natural farming, “ I pity you, for it won’t work”. I answered , “on the contrary I sincerely believe it is the answer to our farmers plight, their ability to make their own input requirements and being empowered”. And Dodongs lettuce story is one of the best example as with many others whose lives have changed moving to the natural way of farming.

This natural farming technology is taught locally by Andrey Lim, the 2009 Secretary of Agriculture Awardee for Outstanding Organic Agriculture Initiative (Individual Advocate Category).

On Money:
I like to share these Chinese proverbs. A good reminder to put money in its proper perspective in our life. Money can usually act as “oxygen to our lives”, and certainly has a “calming effect” but it is not the answer to everything.

“Money can buy you a house , but it can’t buy you a home

Money can buy you a clock, but not time

Money can buy you a bed, but it can’t give you sleep or peace of mind

Money can buy you a book, but not knowledge or wisdom

Money can pay for a doctor, but it can’t buy you good health

Money can buy you blood , but it can’t give you life

Money can even buy you rank or position , but not respect

Money can buy you sex but not love”.

Batangas Seminar

We might be headed for Batangas on the 3rd week of September for a free seminar, hosted by LGUs.

Will keep you posted.

3rd Quarter

I got notice that my Leo Rat horoscope for September is ready for viewing.

There had been no vacant time, with so many things going the past weeks and months even. We just didn't realize how busy we were because we were seeing friends, farms and travelling a lot. But inbetween and through cellphones, yes, now I realize that we did a lot.

My horoscope reads now (I rarely read, I am just waiting for a download that I decided to surf) that we will be more busy! I guess its about turnover of previous work done.

We are working on plans for our move to the Araneta Center for a centralized location. Provincial bus terminals, buses to pier, major cross for train stations, variety of shopping around, accessible from all points and we will have a more secure and larger parking area.

Our shipment of new Certified Parent Stocks is arriving soon....and we can't wait for our new lines to be available some 6months from now.

Shows, seminars, travels...seems all are in September.

The last day of August, a holiday....I am sitting in the coffeeshop of the hotel I frequent in Vigan... earlier I was around walking and looking at trinkets :). Ilocos Sur visits are my time away from time.

Oh yes, aside from work....my social schedule for September is also full. Is it because of age that you decide you all want to see you kinder friends?????

September W/ Ka Lui

You must know Ka Lui (Tabing) of Sa Kabukiran fame from DZMM (every Saturday and Sunday at 4:14-5:30am).

He is holding a seminar on September 6, Sunday, at about 2pm at AANI Quezon Memorial Circle.

Doc Rey is invited to give a talk on Raising Free Range Chicken.

Hope you can join us :)

Natural & Conventional

Opposite poles attract. Everything has pros and cons. No one thing is solely right nor wrong. Everything has its benefits. Total different ideas and practices may meet.....Those are some things we learned over time....experience dictates so.

Andry and Doc Rey are BOTH...take note, BOTH Pisces Horses. Both born in March and in 1954. The worst combination for my Leo Rat! Jojie and I are so different from Andry and Doc Rey, but then again, the four (4) of us are all so different from one another.

But, experience led us to the wisdom that the differences should help one another and everything is doable as long as the doer accepts it....so let's give everyone the choice to select what they want to do...for it to be doable and sustainable.

Remember when we all first met. Both men had their eyes closed. Maybe it was Jojie and my chit chatting that made them realize that they had to listen as they had no choice being thrown in that company.

They both realized that natural farming has to know, listen to conventional practices. Same with Doc Rey, he just had to see reasons and outcome to accept the natural farming way. Even if you don't practice...JUST LISTEN and be open. Later, you will find you way into it also, w/o realizing it. Because eventually you will see the logics and the whys.

That is what happened. Natural farming and conventional practices may and SHOULD be merged. There will be practices in poultry management or in all aspects, that we can't throw away.

Classic examples are the followers of natural farming. They attend Andry's seminar. When they go into Sunshines, there may be problems encountered. Brooding most especially..then hygience when they don't follow the spraying of the IMOs properly :)

Most who attended both Andry's and Doc Rey's seminars separately do better...because they are able to merge and select.

Lately and when possible...Andry and Doc Rey are present in one another's seminars. Even when silent, they both know that they can both count on one another. When technical questions arise..the ones that you don't just read on...Doc Rey can show the light. When the natural feeds are asked...oh...Andry has the floor, dancing around.

Bottom line is...for natural farming enthusiasts...you can't throw away conventional and scientific ways. We need both and all. Knowledge about both will give you a larger picture to play color or edit :)

Bohol Schedule

Updated September 09.

Nope, it doesn't mean our schedules got knotted....

It means, we are scheduled to go to Bohol! Never been there before and looking forward to some rest and recreation, of course after poultry management seminars :)

September 21, Baclayon, Bamboo House - POSTPONED

Since we have a host, I think seminar is FREE and outsiders may attend.

Will post further datas.

We have been requested by host to delay schedule for a further date because the one of the hosts wants to attend the seminar but will be out on Sep20-23. Will update once settled :)

Ultimate Taste Test

Some people go through tough tests. Some, we opt to go through. Others are just showered our way, much like blessings in disguise :)

I ran across an Ultimate Taste Test, wherein food companies are invited to showcase and they will be rated by guests.

Well, here I go again....who will cook? But, I think I like to take this up. It should be fun :)

Best Weight To Grow

I had just been asked "What's the best weight to get a good ROI"?

I replied...Let's start with what your market wants and work from there.

Easiest to give first what the immediate market wants and see how you can work around that. That way, the market is around you and no need to transport nor spend for information campaigns far and wide :)

As you are getting known, then educate them and introduce the weights you want. That way, you will give them options too.

Timing

Why are we fully booked these past days and the coming weeks?

You guessed it! The BER months are here and it is perfect timing to grow now for the December-January festivities.

We ourselves have to load. Every week Doc Rey had been preparing to brood, but we always run out now. He will surely put his foot down soon and just reminded me to prepare for Agrilink 2009.

Liliw Durian

Nakakaaliw when I saw native Durian as Davao knows them.

After a lovely lunch at the place of Jonathan and Marlyn Polistico, we went around town to look at footwear...Liliw is footwear capital.

We can't believe our eyes when we say mountains of Durian at PHP50 per kilo. Wow, that is cheap. It was exactly like the Davao natives.

Our tourguide, Tita Pilar told us the story of how her uncle brought back some seeds from Davao where he worked. He and a brother (the father of Tita Pilar and Marlyn) planted in the mountians and was successful in propagting Durian. They shared the seeds with the other Liliw folks and that was how Liliw now reaps Durian in all its glory.

That was started in 1930 with a few seeds. Another lesson known from before but reiterated by this sight....plant and plant and you will reap.

Let Liliw be known for Durian too! Zac Sarian featured it today and we hope noses get led to quaint Liliw.

Changes

I feel so bad about my lack of time to post the past weeks. Going online is a means of keeping my sanity when I have to relax, so when I started this blog, it was nothing new but more exciting. Mix of play and work!

So many things kept me away from the site. I will say a balance of work and play...makes you want to live forever.

I was toying on the idea of changing truck wraps for the chickvans. We had changed logos and the truck wraps had been delayed in changes.

Well, what I can't decide for...God decided for me. Last Friday, one chickvan figured in an accident. Moral of the lesson.,...do not drive when sleepy! Lesson #2, sometimes it may be cheaper to get a new one rather than repair a truck that had served well already and will cost a lot to bring back to excellent condition. #3, while going through the phases of releasing problems...take time to relax.

On the way home..we thought about eating Camaro at Everybody's Cafe. Exit Mabalacat, and we had a very filling merienda cena. Next stop was at Susie's to get Tibok Tibok and Mochi.

Fretting about who was to drive for the hatch tomorrow....then we realized that we just hatch every once a week starting Thursday. We had fallback postions, but God makes you play your own games first....He saw that you obeyed first before questioning :)

Be open to changes. It happens for reasons.

Duku Lanzones

Been so busy with work and relaxing...with relatives, friends and alone :)

One of the friendship trips we did was going to Laguna, Magdalena and Liliw. No chickens, no chicken talk...just eating and talking.

I did both beside this Duku Lanzones tree. It was the sweetest and easiest Lanzones to eat for me. The origin was from Thailand. It was easy to open, hardly any latex so not yukky to handle. Seeds were not bitter. It was sweet but had that bite of a Lanzones.

Literally, I stood by the tree while chatting with friends. When we had to walk further and away, I spotted another tree and stood by there!

Little did I know that Zac Sarian took pictures of me in several phases of my studying, tasting and eating to my heart's content. I hope he doesn't play on me and publish those unguarded moments.

I now see the importance of planting and planting. That farm we went to was just heaven with all the various fruiting trees and coolness the shades brought.

Exotic fruit trees are available at Teresa Orchard, Teresa, Rizal. We will carry these trees in our new location in Cubao.

Use Your Senses

Tonight Doc Rey was in a farm to check on brooding. When he got there late in the afternoon, he asked that additional heating source be added. Not contented with what science suggests, he set to eat dinner and decided to stay longer. The sky was dark and the wind was starting to blow stronger.

Again, do not be contented with the suggestion of 1watt per bird during brooding. Observe and use your senses. Your eyes and ears will tell you if the chicks are comfortable and contented.

Remember....they need enough heat, but equally important - they need fresh air that circulates. Let the fresh air enter and exit, not just circulating inside that becomes stale.

In cold weather, like tonight, do not put curtains or wrap the brooder's walls....instead, add source of heat.

Think of installing wind breakers :)

Wind Breakers

Planning to plant living fence or trees in your brooding/ranging area?

Having them as wind breakers may be a good idea, aside from the fact of course that they will be productive in terms of fruits, lumber, fragrance, medicinal etc.

How as wind breakers? Observe the direction of the wind and plan planting to break the strong winds.

Why install wind breakers? Instead of putting curtains in the pen, that inhibits proper air circulation, wind breakers will do the job. That will be good for your brooding/ranging area so your Sunshines will be protected. Also if the farm beside you sprays pesticides, you will be able to cover your farm :)

No Obligation

We did a seminar yesterday in Greenhills for a private charity of an individual. She gives livelihood then buys back the chickens to sell, to help her chosen groups. Mostly resettlement areas, a major Television/Radio network liked her projects and had done similar ones. Their respective projects are in place now, but they want the employees to be more aware.

They have partnered and Mrs Private Charity will now purchase network's harvests too.

We got several calls for this free seminar and we accepted some to join. Sadly, I turned down some as I was embarrassed to decide to announce it when this was supposed to be a private seminar.

Surely the network's foundation's liasons were there. Mrs Private Charity's employees were there. But guess who were most excited and came with photos of their farm? The blog readers who walked in after requesting attendance :)

They were not obligated to sit in, not directed to be there...and most of all, not tasked to take care of chickens.

As we say, in everything you do....you should love it passionately!

Thank you that our blog guests were included in the merienda. Thank you, but no thank you, to the seminar fee being given to Doc Rey. We love what we are doing and the seminars are not our source of income. I asked that the "fee" be given to Mrs Private Charity's choice group.

Cleanout

Rainy days cleaning...

Two (2) straight hatching days, we fully booked and didn't leave any for retail in Fairview. To clean out and clear. Inventory zeroes out and time to take stock of equipments.

Same with our Organika's stocks. We didn't stock the freezers last week. Only to realize that our stocks are not enough and it means we have to add freezers to have more supply of dressed chickens on hand.

Clearing and cleaning makes you see what has to be done to improve :)

Thank God Its Friday

Three (3) weeks from now, starting Aug27, we will be hatching once (1x) a week. We added manpower and decided to hatch weekly. Trial basis for several reasons:

1) We get stressed on logistics for 1day in a week :)

2) Hatchery open/close is lessened and manpower is also cut by 50%.

3) We can do other things to improve.

It will get to get used to new schedule...all hatches will be on a Thursday soon. You get the day olds on Friday.

This is our answer to try keeping our costs down.

Can You Guess What's New?

Do you hear that on the Jollibee radio ads running now? They are introducing a new product and was teasing the listener if they can guess what it was. I like their ads and taglines. Bee happy.

We are bringing in new strains/products, to add to our present line of Sunshines. ADD, not change nor remove. It just shows we thought about our moves from the start and saw that right decisions were made. So no need to change....ADD yes. To give you choices, all of which are up to our standards.

From SASSO of France, again another right choice....we will be bringing you something new.

Can you guess what it is?

Landslide

Sounds like how you'd describe the outpouring of emotions or how the results will be :)

I may always talk in figures and ironies...but this is literally a landslide. I don't know how to save pics from mms sent to my phone but its on the news....a portion of Caranglan in between San Jose in Nueva Ecija and Sta Fe in Nueva Vizacaya, was closed to traffic because the can't clear the landslide. Four (4) hours of work is erased, or rather surmounted by 10mins of rain :(

Doc Rey left Santiago after lunch so he has time to rest in Manila before proceeding to Cavite for a seminar in the Capitol. Getting a call in the afternoon about closed traffic sounded like a delay. It was good...I was out with friends for the evening!

By 3am, the traffic was not moving...it spelled YIKES. It meant that I, yes moi....was to give the talk for Sunshines. Never did this happen. Give me a cooking demo even if I didn't know really how to cook. BUT to have technical questions thrown your way................can't say NO WAY and not show up.

Armed with a power point that was the scratch work of the present one...good it was even left in my laptop....,I introduced myself and came upfront with the prospects of listening to me. Wehehehehe, took out my nervousness as I already told them of my situation. I was the marketing person...shoot me later with questions about where and how to market. But for technicals, may we set that for Doc Rey?

I sit in during seminars, so going through the power point was easy. The participants were great. Attentive and put me at ease from the first minute. You know from the start if you are OK with your audience.

At the end, I knew I made the right decision to go on with the 3hr trip...more like 4 as I was getting lost..maybe wanting to get lost as an alibi for not showing up! Maybe I didn't satisfy their questions, but they sure understood that we are very open to going back to Cavite again :)

Thank you to Harbest for hooking us up with their projects.

Dressed In AANI FTI

We are going to secure our booth at AANI FTI Weekend Market (behind Sunshine Mall as you enter FTI compound) to include poultry supplies and equipments. Backyard farmers find it difficult to go to poultry supply stores for their needs and we want to make it easier for them.

Since we are fixing it, we have decided to look into our requests lists from customers and we will be setting up a freezer there to accommodate the dressed Sunshines clients.

Yes we still deliver...but people do want to shop around and walk :)

Greenhills Seminar

A TV network's foundation is working with a private individual's charitable livelihood and marketing of produce. The turn around for projects had been successful and now they want to make sure they are doing the proper ways before taking it to a higher level.

In this light, they want their key people to learn how to raise our Sunshines, so they may re-echo to the recipients, at the same time, they will know the product they are marketing.

We are doing a seminar for that group in an office in Greenhills, on Monday, August 10 at 3pm.

If you are interested, call me at (0917) 847-2639...I am sure I can accommodate you to join in that FREE seminar.

Coming Up

People who want to alleviate others' plights, or the ones who thirst for knowledge....do still, or actually work more harder when it is least expected.

I got two calls today for seminars in their area. One in Batangas, the other one in Nueva Ecija.

Will post schedules once finalized. Looking at August/September time tables.

Both will be FREE as they are organized by LGUs.

I Can Hear You

We thought it will be a long day, watching the funeral of Tita Cory on TV, the strong rains wanting you to have champorado and tuyo!

I had the luxury of staying in bed and watching TV. We unexpectedly got a rush of orders for delivery of dressed chickens. Surprising number. Maybe everyone wants to have a good roast or comforting steaming chicken soup after crying their hearts out.

Saw my sister Joy yesterday and passed by Tita Pilar, best friend of mommy today. Same verdict. Mothers planning on their last days say the same things and have parallel ideals. It is universal. Moms only go when they hear that "We will be OK".

When mothers talk, listen. All mothers only want the best for you.

What touched me most was how Kris spoke about the close in security of Pres. Aquino being family. It is not much about the supposed recall of the two gentlemen...because they can afford to get private security anyway. Kris spoke about them being always there and part of their lives, even at the lowest points. They were there even when the family wanted privacy. You can sense the devotion of that salute to Pres. Aquino after her security spoke during the requiem mass.

It is when you do good to the person who thinks they don't have a place, the ones that you do not expect from....you are sincere.

Her death came at a time when we need to rethink, reassess and focus. At a time that alliances are formed and regrouped....Use what was captured by the cameras. Feel for what you want and need. Most of all, listen....shhhhh

No Power, NoEffort

Recall Jojie's Crib.

This requires no electricity. Assembles like 1 2 3. Minimal cost. Easy to maintain.

Last weekend, Zac Sarian featured it in his Agri Page of the Manila Bulletin.

Read about it here.

Plant

If you enjoyed the pictures I have taken of our fruit bearing trees in the farm....more so for me!

The photos may have fed your eyes, but the taste of the freshest produce, picked off the tree and eaten is an entirely different high.

I remember Ka Pio say once that your harvest is the sweetest ones you may eat. Its not just because of the excitement and the work that went into your farm. But reality is, the best is the freshest. You lose the taste as it ages.....yes I agree, doesn't say the same for wine :)

Now I am on a rampage to plant plant plant.

The other week, during Agri Kapihan, I got Malunggay, Abiu, Chinese Gabi and Rambutan among other things. It has travelled to Isabela already.

How do I get to harvest fast? I forget all about it and get excited everytime I go around them. Next thing is....it is harvest time.

Take A Ride, Reinvent Tools

Constant change.... No, I wasn't referring to the CD of Jose Mari Chan that carries the song he set a melody to, for the poem of Ninoy for Cory :)

I meant constant learning. It is enjoyable to work with motivated and resourceful people. The ones that contribute and question then suggest. The type of grower who reads, asks and learns also on their own...THEN asks for clarifications.

From those types of farmers....WE ALL LEARN together.

This is a nice car....movable tractor.

Bamboo slat flooring. Posts and roofing are sturdy. You may lay nipa on roofing, or best is to have it under trees for insulation. The other ones had floorings close to the ground.

But there are several of these.

I like the mezzanine height for the bamboo slat flooring. The clearance from the ground allowed additional shelter for the chickens.

Am sure the caretaker just thought about the new design after building some and observing what he may do to better the design. Makes range rotation much easier.

Reasons, Cycles & Solutions

Unusual that I didn't post for eight (8) straight days. The rounds of seminars, farm visits, branch visits...our normal work..kept us busy.

In the week that past, I also had the luxury of seeing Ria while we were both in Vigan for work. FB told me she was somewhere in Ilocos, so the moment I checked in at Vigan, I texted her and we met for lunch, antique shopping and dinner. After about 2days, when we both got back to Manila, we met friends in high school for lunch and vowed to go for dinner next week. Sounds we are getting old and have the luxury to time now wehehhehhe.

It was my mother's last days here and we planned for the 40th day to go to Mass and have a simple dinner. Since I was in Vigan, I volunteered to bring Longaniza and Bagnet. For soup....I deliberated but thought...well maybe....

We are left with "a" or a "couple" of roasted Sunnies almost every night. True we can adjust the number...but we'd rather have the problem of surplus, rather than have an empty store early in the evening.

We can't sell it the next day, so we freeze it and eat it ourselves :) Thing is, we are in and out and I had some sent frozen to Manila.

I took a couple of frozen roasted Sunnies early in the day and asked the cook to slow boil it. It wasn't about cooking it anymore...but recycling to bring out a different flavor for the already seasoned and done Sunshines. From the soup stock, you know you had a winner. I had some sotanghon prepared and dropped them. Prepared on the side were fried garlic chips and freshly minced onion leaves.

First three servings went to the boys. Doc Rey of course will adore what I prepared...given! I was scared about my brother in law Andoy's Chinese pintasero food taste and dentist bar owner Gelo's reaction. Wowoweeeee!!! They both said it was great. Winner!

Andoy and friends are thinking of opening a restaurant and asked me about the chicken. I told them what it was exactly....our surplus that we didn't know what to do with. A restaurant can and should serve it several ways.

There was a reason for my thinking of what to prepare that dinner. It lead me to think and though about my stuff in the freezer :)

The resulting chicken soup was rich in flavor, simply good and it got rid of problems...:)
